Pippa Harrison Tongue Tie
Specialist Infant Feeding & Tongue Tie Practitioner
Your appointment will include a discussion of your feeding history and I like to observe a feed so we can look at positioning and attachment and solve any issues.
I will assess baby's tongue function and appearance using the Hazel Baker Assessment Tool For Lingual Frenulum Function and discuss my findings with you. I will then discuss the risks and benefits of frenulotmy and answer any pending questions/concerns. You will then be asked to sign a consent form.
If we go ahead with the division I will discuss with you what to expect regarding healing and suggest a feeding plan if needed. I am available via text, email or phone for any questions or queries afterwards and will contact you for further support and follow up if needed.
Regardless of the need for tongue-tie division, we will offer infant feeding support for both bottle and breast fed babies, tailored to your individual needs. We can look at position and attachment, low milk supply or over supply, slow weight gain, nipple shields, exclusive pumping, combination feeding, formula feeding challenges, complex breast feeding issues, mastitis, thrush, colic & reflux, and tongue-tie.
We will support you in finding the way forward for you and your baby.
Division of a tongue-tie, or frenulotomy, is made by snipping the frenulum under the tongue.
The division is performed using a tongue director to lift the tongue, sterile, single use, straight blunt ended scissors and sterile gloves under direct light.
The baby will be swaddled in a towel and head held gently to avoid movement. It takes seconds and causes little discomfort for your baby.
Babies will cry for a very short period which settles very quickly with feeding. Anaesthetic is not used and bleeding is usually minimal. We will support you with the first post procedure feed.
All consultations will take place in our CQC regulated clinic
We will do an in depth assessment of your feeding history and work through a problem solving session with tongue-tie assessment and put together a feeding plan if needed.

Following assessment and support, if a tongue-tie is found to be affecting tongue function, and this is having an impact on feeding, we will perform a tongue tie division after discussing the procedure with you. We will then support you with the first post procedure feed.
